Elementary Building Update April 27

Dear Grades PK-6 Parents & Guardians,

Governor Mike DeWine recently announced that school buildings in Ohio will remain closed through the end of this school year.  Home learning will continue (remotely) for the remainder of this school year.  Please continue to work with the district this school year as we provide the best education possible during these difficult times.  We will continue to deliver building specific procedures and school information over the next month. Be sure to stay tuned to classroom and district Remind, building and district Twitter, district Facebook and school website messages for up-to-date information and guidance.

School Instruction at Home & Virtual Field Trips:

As a reminder, students are required to participate each day with our online assignments.  NES teachers will continue to instruct students (online) through this school closure.  If you have questions about student work, please contact your teacher(s) during regular school hours (M-F). You may not receive a response until the following school day if you contact teachers after 3:30 p.m. or on weekends.  Starting April 27th, new instruction will take place Monday -Thursday, with Fridays being designated as Virtual Field Trip days for each grade level.  There will also be no new instruction during the last week of school (May 18-22) as classrooms will conduct virtual field trips, virtual parties, award days, virtual field days, and possibly create goodbye messages/moments to close the week/year.

May 15th - Drop-Off/Pick-up:

We will hold a Drop-off/ Pick-up day on May 15th for parents/guardians to drop off classroom textbooks, teacher’s AR books, library books, completed paper packets (Pk-Kg), sight word rings (Kg), etc.  Students will be asked to keep school issued laptops, Ipads, and charging cords at home in a safe location over the summer. These items will need to be returned when we come back to school. As we do not know when we will open, we want to be prepared to start school online if we do not open as scheduled in August. Parents will pick up their child’s personal belongings (left in the classroom) in the gymnasium on May 15th.  Please wear a mask of your choice when entering the building.  Follow ALL social distance guidelines.  Please do not stop and congregate.  We will have VERY limited staff on duty on this day.  Our office and classrooms will NOT be open. One parent/guardian may enter the building through the PK-2 front lobby doors.  You will be directed to the gymnasium to drop off your child’s school items at their specific homeroom teacher table. You will then pick up your child’s bagged personal belongings at the same table.  We are tentatively planning to have Canyon book orders ready for pick up and Mother/Son Dodgeball & Father/Daughter Dance refunds ready for distribution on this day. You will exit the building through the 3-6 front lobby doors. Please be sure to arrive at school during your specific times listed below on May 15th.

*If you have multiple students, you will pick the items up at the time allotted to the oldest student at NES. (ie: If you have a 6th grader, a 1st grader, and Pk student, you come at 8:00-9:00 a.m. during the 6th grader’s time slot).

Student Instruction Workload at Home:

You should expect your child to participate with school work up to 2 hours (max) each day.  One hour and 40 minutes will be for subject area work and 20 minutes is for your special.  Students and parents should stop working when they have reached a maximum of 2 hours of total work for a single “school day.”  This incomplete work will not count against your child’s grade. What you submit will be graded.  It will be important that you keep up with any directions that your teacher(s) provide.  Also, don't forget about your Special.  All students will follow the same daily 20 minute special schedule. Mondays will be Library. Students will need to read a book of their choice for 20 minutes.  Tuesdays will be Tech class, Wednesday is Gym, Thursday is Art, and Friday is Music. Please be sure that all students log into his or her Specials Google Classroom for directions and click on Turn in or mark as ”Done” when you complete your special for the day. This will be used for your specials grade.

4th Quarter Grades:

Be sure to do your absolute best to keep up with your online and/or hardcopy classwork. Our assignments are graded. If students are not working, parents and guardians will be contacted by a teacher, principal, and/or our attendance officer.  4th quarter grades have been changed to “Pass/Fail.”  Class work that should be attempted and is not started will be accounted for when grading.  Parents/Guardians should check their child’s online grades often to be sure that assignments are not missing.  Contact your teacher if you cannot locate your online gradebook password. We plan to mail student grade cards and 2020-21 class lists home in late May/early June.

Camp Palmer:

Camp Palmer is cancelled for grade 6 students. Mr. Wesche will contact parents/guardians to explain the process of closing out the fundraiser. Please direct all questions about Camp Palmer to Mr. Wesche at lwesche@napoleonareaschools.org .

Feel free to call or email your child’s teacher(s) or principal if you have any questions.  Let’s do our part to stay engaged with school work and continue to stay healthy. We miss our students and look forward to seeing you all in the future. Take care and stay well.

Sincerely,

Mr. Matt Dietrich, PK-2 Principal

Mr. Adam Niese, 3-6 Principal
